302 stainless steel plate is a type of austenitic stainless steel and can be considered a high-carbon version of 304 stainless steel. By moderately increasing the carbon content, it achieves higher mechanical strength and cold working hardening ability than 304 while maintaining good corrosion resistance.

Product Introduction

302 Stainless Steel Plate is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel, often considered the original "18-8 stainless steel" (18% chromium, 8% nickel). It is the immediate predecessor to 304, which has since become the far more common general-purpose grade.

302 offers excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of atmospheric and mild chemical environments, along with good formability, toughness, and weldability. While it has largely been superseded by 304 in standard specifications, understanding 302 is important for historical context, maintenance of older equipment, and in applications where its specific work-hardening characteristics might be beneficial. It is the benchmark against which many other austenitic grades are compared.

ASTM A240/A240M (Now largely lists 304 instead)		For modern procurement, 304 is almost always the appropriate choice unless a specific legacy code requires 302.
Common Applications• Historical: Widely used in mid-20th century for a vast array of applications now served by 304.
• Modern: Springs, fasteners, wire forms, and applications where higher work-hardening is desired.		Today, its use is largely specialized within its high-carbon variant 302HQ for cold heading.
