347 stainless steel is a stabilized stainless steel based on 18-8 austenitic stainless steel (such as 304), which achieves excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion by adding niobium (Nb). It is especially suitable for welding and for equipment operating in certain high-temperature ranges (approximately 427–816°C).

Product Introduction

347 Stainless Steel Plate is a columbium (niobium)-stabilized austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. Its primary design purpose is to provide exceptional resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to high temperatures (in the range of 800-1500°F / 427-816°C), a phenomenon known as "sensitization" or "weld decay."

The addition of niobium (Nb), in an amount at least 10 times the carbon content, acts as a stabilizing element. Niobium combines preferentially with carbon to form niobium carbides, preventing chromium depletion at grain boundaries. This makes 347 the premier choice for welded components and equipment that operate at elevated temperatures where standard grades like 304 would fail due to intergranular attack. Type 347H is a higher-carbon variant (0.04-0.10% C) specifically designed for enhanced high-temperature strength.
