Product Introduction

420 Stainless Steel Bar is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel specifically engineered for applications requiring superior hardness, wear resistance, and edge retention in bar stock form. With carbon content ranging from 0.15% to 0.40% (significantly higher than 410's 0.08-0.15%), 420 achieves substantially higher hardness levels—up to 55 HRC after proper heat treatment. This makes it the material of choice for cutting implements, surgical instruments, and wear-resistant components where maintaining sharp edges and resisting abrasion are critical requirements.

Available in rounds, squares, flats, and hexagons, 420 stainless steel bar combines enhanced hardness capability with the basic corrosion resistance characteristic of martensitic stainless steels. While its corrosion resistance is limited compared to austenitic grades, it offers significantly better performance than tool steels in mildly corrosive environments. The higher carbon content enables deeper hardening and better edge retention, positioning 420 as the premium choice for applications that demand both hardness and some corrosion resistance in bar form, bridging the gap between general-purpose stainless steels and specialized tool steels.

Cold Finished: Bright bar
Centerless Ground: Precision ground
Polished: For cutlery applications
Peeled: Improved surface for machining
Various finishes available; polished finishes common for cutlery applications.
Corrosion ResistanceModerate resistance to water, atmosphere, and mild chemicals. Not for marine or harsh chemical environments.Better than tool steels but inferior to 304/316; requires proper passivation.
Machining Characteristics• Machined in annealed condition• Heat treat after machining• Higher tool wear than 410
• Good chip control• Requires sharp tools
Typically machined soft, then hardened; hardened material is difficult to machine.
