Product Introduction

416 Stainless Steel Bar is a free-machining martensitic stainless steel specifically engineered for high-volume machining applications requiring the combination of corrosion resistance, hardness, and exceptional machinability in bar form. By incorporating sulfur (0.15% minimum) and sometimes selenium or phosphorus additions, 416 achieves dramatically improved machinability compared to standard martensitic grades like 410, while maintaining the heat-treatable characteristics and magnetic properties of martensitic stainless steels. This grade represents the optimal solution for applications requiring extensive machining of hardened components, such as fasteners, valve parts, and precision mechanical components in bar configurations.

Available in rounds, squares, hexagons, and flats, 416 stainless steel bar offers unparalleled machining performance in a heat-treatable stainless steel. The sulfur/selenium additions create chip-breaking inclusions that facilitate faster machining speeds, reduced tool wear, and improved surface finishes, typically achieving machinability ratings of 85% of B1112 steel. While its corrosion resistance is reduced compared to sulfur-free grades due to the sulfide inclusions, 416 remains suitable for many applications where machining efficiency and hardness capabilities are more critical than maximum corrosion resistance.

• Cutting Speed: 25-40% faster than 410
• Feed Rates: Higher than conventional grades

Enables high-speed production of complex machined parts with reduced tooling costs.

Corrosion Resistance

Moderate resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, and mild chemicals. Inferior to 410 due to sulfide inclusions. Not suitable for marine environments.

Suitable for many industrial applications; 416Se offers slightly better corrosion resistance.

Heat Treatment Capability

Austenitizing: 980-1010°C (air or oil quench)
Tempering Range: 150-650°C
Maximum Hardness: ~42 HRC
Annealing: 815-870°C, slow cool

Can be hardened to various levels depending on tempering temperature.

Welding Characteristics

Very poor weldability due to sulfur content
High hot cracking susceptibilityGenerally avoided for welded construction
