409 Stainless Steel Bar is a cost-effective titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel specifically developed for automotive exhaust systems and moderate temperature applications in bar form. With a lower chromium content (10.5-11.7%) compared to traditional stainless steels, 409 offers significant cost savings while providing adequate corrosion resistance for many automotive and industrial bar applications. The titanium addition (6× carbon minimum) stabilizes the alloy against sensitization during welding and exposure to moderate temperatures, making it suitable for applications where cost constraints are as important as performance requirements.

Available in rounds, squares, flats, and hexagons, 409 stainless steel bar represents an optimal balance between performance and economics for high-volume manufacturing. Its ferritic structure provides natural resistance to stress corrosion cracking and maintains low thermal expansion characteristics, while the titanium stabilization ensures weldability and thermal stability. Originally developed for automotive exhaust systems, 409 has found widespread application in various industries where corrosion resistance beyond carbon steel is required, but the premium performance and cost of 304 stainless steel bar are unnecessary.
