Product Introduction

405 Stainless Steel Bar is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel specifically designed to prevent hardening during welding and cooling from high temperatures in bar applications. By incorporating aluminum (0.10-0.30%) in addition to chromium, 405 effectively controls the formation of martensite in the heat-affected zone of welds, making it an ideal choice for bar components requiring extensive welding fabrication where post-weld heat treatment is impractical or undesirable. This unique composition bridges the gap between straight chromium ferritic stainless steels and austenitic grades, offering good corrosion resistance, weldability, and thermal stability in a cost-effective, nickel-free alloy.

Available in rounds, squares, flats, hexagons, and angles, 405 stainless steel bar provides manufacturers with a versatile material solution for components that undergo welding operations but require consistent properties across the welded structure. The aluminum addition promotes ferrite formation and stabilizes the microstructure, preventing the hard, brittle martensite that typically forms in similar chromium steels after welding. Particularly valuable in heat exchangers, furnace parts, moderate temperature applications, and welded fabrications, 405 offers reliable performance while maintaining the beneficial properties of ferritic stainless steels, including resistance to stress corrosion cracking and lower thermal expansion.

Various surface finishes for different application requirements.

Corrosion Resistance

Good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, nitric acid, organic acids, and fresh water. Similar to 410 but inferior to 304. Not suitable for marine or chloride-rich environments.

Adequate for many industrial bar applications; not for severe corrosive conditions.

Machining Characteristics

• Good machinability for ferritic grade
• Better than austenitic grades in some aspects
• Good chip control• Moderate tool wear• Surface finish achievable

Free-machining characteristics better than many austenitic grades.

Welding Characteristics

Good weldability for ferritic grade
Aluminum stabilization maintains properties
No pre-heat required for thin sections
Matching filler metals recommended
Post-weld annealing optional

Better weldability than standard ferritic grades due to aluminum stabilization.

Temperature Limits

Maximum Service: 700°C
Continuous Service: Up to 650°C
Avoid: 475-900°C (embrittlement range)
Not for cryogenic applications

Limited high-temperature capability due to 475°C embrittlement risk.
