Product Introduction

302 Stainless Steel Bar is the original "18-8" austenitic stainless steel from which the popular 304 grade was developed, featuring slightly higher carbon content (≤0.15%) to provide marginally better strength in the cold-worked condition. With a composition of 17-19% chromium and 8-10% nickel, 302 offers virtually identical properties to 304 in most applications but delivers superior strength when cold-worked, making it particularly valuable for cold-headed and cold-formed components like springs, fasteners, and wire forms in bar configurations. This grade represents the foundational stainless steel chemistry that established austenitic stainless steels as versatile engineering materials for bar applications.

Available in rounds, squares, flats, hexagons, and angles, 302 stainless steel bar maintains its significance in specific markets where its slightly higher strength and hardness are advantageous, particularly in cold-formed components and spring applications. While 304 has largely superseded 302 in most general bar applications due to its improved weldability and corrosion resistance, 302 remains relevant in traditional specifications, aerospace applications, and specialized markets where maximum strength in the cold-worked condition is prioritized over optimal weldability or where legacy specifications persist.
