2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Bar
2205 duplex stainless steel rod is a type of duplex stainless steel rod with approximately equal proportions of ferrite and austenite structures. It combines the toughness and weldability of austenitic stainless steel, as well as the high strength and chloride stress corrosion resistance of ferritic stainless steel, and has excellent comprehensive performance.

Product Introduction

2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Bar is a premium-grade duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel that combines the best properties of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels in bar form. With approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite in its microstructure, 2205 offers approximately twice the yield strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels (304/316) while providing superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion. This unique combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance makes 2205 the material of choice for demanding applications in oil and gas, chemical processing, marine, pulp and paper, and desalination industries where both mechanical integrity and corrosion resistance are critical.

Available in rounds, squares, flats, hexagons, and special shapes, 2205 duplex stainless steel bar provides exceptional value through its ability to withstand aggressive environments while allowing for component size reduction compared to traditional austenitic grades. The balanced microstructure provides natural resistance to stress corrosion cracking—a common failure mode for austenitic stainless steels in chloride-containing environments—while maintaining good toughness and weldability. With its high chromium (22%), molybdenum (3%), and nitrogen content, 2205 delivers performance that bridges the gap between standard stainless steels and more expensive nickel alloys in bar stock applications.

Peeled: Improved surface for machining

Various surface finishes available for different requirements.

Corrosion Resistance

Exceptional: PREN*: 34-36
Excellent resistance to: chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, crevice corrosion, erosion-corrosion.

Superior to 316L in chloride-containing environments; comparable to some 6% Mo austenitics.

Machining Characteristics

• More challenging than austenitic grades
• Higher tool wear due to strength
• Requires rigid setups• Good chip control• Surface finish achievable with proper techniques

Requires more powerful equipment and specialized tooling compared to austenitic grades.

Welding Characteristics

Requires controlled procedures
Maintain phase balance critical
Overmatched filler metals (higher alloy)
Heat input control essential
No preheat required

More demanding than austenitic welding but well-established procedures exist.
