By incorporating aluminum (0.10-0.30%) in addition to chromium, 405 effectively controls the formation of martensite in the heat-affected zone of welds, making it an ideal choice for applications requiring extensive welding fabrication where post-weld heat treatment is impractical or undesirable. This unique composition bridges the gap between straight chromium ferritic stainless steels and austenitic grades, offering good corrosion resistance, weldability, and thermal stability in a cost-effective, nickel-free alloy.

Heat Treatment

Annealing: 760-830°C, air or slow cool

Can only be strengthened by cold working; limited high-temperature capability due to 475°C embrittlement risk.

Corrosion Resistance

Good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, nitric acid, organic acids, and fresh water. Similar to 410 but inferior to 304. Not suitable for marine or chloride-rich environments.

Adequate for many industrial applications; not for severe corrosive conditions.
