Product Introduction

302 Stainless Steel Coil is the original and classic austenitic stainless steel from which the popular 304 grade was developed. With a composition of 17-19% chromium and 8-10% nickel, 302 offers virtually identical properties to 304 in most applications but features slightly higher carbon content (≤0.15% vs. ≤0.08% for 304), giving it marginally better strength in the cold-worked condition. This grade represents the foundational "18-8" stainless steel chemistry that established austenitic stainless steels as versatile engineering materials, providing an excellent balance of corrosion resistance, formability, and mechanical properties.

Supplied in continuous coil form, 302 stainless steel maintains its significance in specific applications where its slightly higher strength and hardness are advantageous, particularly in cold-headed and cold-formed components like springs, fasteners, and wire forms. While 304 has largely superseded 302 in most general applications due to its improved weldability and corrosion resistance, 302 remains relevant in markets where traditional specifications persist or where maximum strength in the cold-worked condition is prioritized over optimal weldability.
