Titanium Grade 2 Plate
Titanium Grade 2 is the most widely used industrial pure titanium and belongs to the alpha type titanium alloy. Its core feature is that it maintains excellent corrosion resistance (especially in seawater and chloride solutions) while having excellent cold formability and weldability. It is a standard material in the fields of chemical engineering, marine, and medicine.

Product Introduction

Titanium Grade 2 is the most widely used and versatile commercially pure (CP) titanium grade. It offers an optimal balance of moderate strength, excellent formability, weldability, and outstanding corrosion resistance, particularly in oxidizing and chloride-containing environments. As the workhorse of the titanium industry, it provides the fundamental benefits of titanium—high strength-to-weight ratio and biocompatibility—at a reasonable cost, making it suitable for a vast range of industrial, chemical, and marine applications.

Product parameters

Item / Parameter

Specification for Titanium Grade 2 (UNS R50400)

Notes / Significance

Material Family

Commercially Pure Titanium (Alpha Alloy, Unalloyed)

The standard, ductile grade of pure titanium.

Common Designations

UNS R50400, Ti Grade 2, W.Nr. 3.7035, ASTM Gr.2, CP Ti 2

The most common grade for general corrosion-resistant applications.

Key Characteristics

Excellent corrosion resistance, good formability & weldability, moderate strength.

The benchmark for general-purpose titanium applications.

Chemical Composition (Typical wt.%)

Ti: Balance (≥ 98.9)
O (Oxygen): ≤ 0.25
Fe (Iron): ≤ 0.30
C (Carbon): ≤ 0.08
N (Nitrogen): ≤ 0.03
H (Hydrogen): ≤ 0.015

Interstitial elements (O, Fe) directly control strength and ductility. Grade 2 has a balanced level.

Mechanical Properties (Annealed Plate, Room Temp)

Tensile Strength (Rm): 345 - 483 MPa min
Yield Strength (Rp0.2): 275 - 414 MPa min
Elongation (A): 20% min

Lower strength than alloyed grades but with superior ductility.

Physical Properties

Density: 4.51 g/cm³
Melting Point: ~1660 °C
Elastic Modulus: 105 GPa
Service Temperature: Up to ~300°C (570°F) for continuous service in non-creep applications.

~45% lighter than steel and ~60% heavier than aluminum, with excellent specific strength.

Key Corrosion Resistance

• Exceptional resistance to chlorides, seawater, and brine, immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking (Cl-SCC).
• Excellent resistance to oxidizing environments (e.g., nitric acid, chromic acid).
• Good resistance to weak reducing acids and alkalis.

• ⚠️ Poor resistance to reducing acids (e.g., non-aerated HCl, H₂SO₄) without inhibitors or oxidants.

Its resistance to seawater and wet chlorine is legendary, surpassing stainless steels and copper alloys.

Key Standards (Plate)

ASTM B265 (Standard Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Strip, Sheet, and Plate - Grade 2), ASME SB-265, AMS 4902

ASTM B265 is the primary specification for flat-rolled titanium products.

Formability & Welding

Excellent. Can be cold formed, deep drawn, and welded using all common techniques (GTAW, GMAW, laser) without post-weld heat treatment.

Ease of fabrication is a major advantage over many high-alloy materials.

Typical Applications

• Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, reactors, tanks, piping for chlorides, hypochlorite, and nitric acid.
• Marine & Offshore: Seawater piping, heat exchangers, hull components, risers.
• Power Generation: Condenser tubes in coastal plants, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems.
• Medical: Implant cases, surgical instrument housings (due to biocompatibility).
• Architecture & Consumer Goods.

The go-to material for corrosion-resistant heat exchangers and seawater systems across industries.
